The Brontė Sisters

The Brontės are the world’s most famous literary family. Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontė were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world’s greatest novelists and Anne is a powerful but underrated author.

The articles here give a very brief background to the Brontė sisters, and their life and times in Haworth. With notes on Charlotte Brontė’s two friends, Mary Taylor and Ellen Nussey, it is also possible to compare and contrast the lives of three very different Victorian ladies.

We are very grateful to the staff at the Brontė Society for this information and to Professor Joan Bellamy for the information on Mary Taylor.

You can see documents relating to the Brontes by following the links on the menu to the left of the screen, particularly 'Womens' lives' and the links to each of the sisters' documents
