Biographical Notes Fought for equal rights for men and women carers in 90s. Born c1926. Joyce was working as a clerk for Airedale health authority baby clinics when she was forced to retire aged 60 to care for her sick mother. She applied for invalid care allowance but found she was not eliglbe until she was 65 although men of her age were. So in 1986 she began a legal battle to make the law equal for men and women. By 1991 she began to receive care allowance payments because she had turned 65, but she continued her fight for the benefit of other women. Her legal action took her the European Court which in 1993 found that the Britsh government had been breaking the law. In the same year she was voted Yorkshire Woman of Achievement. Memberships include Keighley Carers Group.
