Biographical Notes The only woman on the Sheffield, Rotherham and District Smoke Abatement Committee (1954). Florence, from Thrybergh, became interested in politics when the miners’ strike was affecting the Rotherham area in 1926. In 1954 when she represented Rotherham Rural Council on the pollution committee she was a Labour councillor in Rotherham District Council; had served on Thrybergh Parish Council since 1941; had only just resigned as secretary of the Thrybergh Labour Party after 14 years; was a member of the Rother Valley Division Education Committee and worked with the South Yorkshire Women’s Advisory Council. Outside her political interests, Florence was a Governor of Maltby Grammar School and a manager of Thrybergh and District Primary Schools and a member of the National Women’s Citizens Association.
