Biographical Notes

Decorated war nurse. Born in Wath in 1883. Mary first started working as a nurse aged 21 in 1904. During the first World War she served inf France coming from Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Nursing Reserve. In 1917 she received the Imperial Red Cross from King George V at Buckingham Palace on her 33rd birthday. She went on to work at Kendray Hospital as Assistant Matron, retiring after 45 years aged 65. Died in Mexborough in 1978, aged 94.
