Life-long carer. Married Ronald Boot. Irene began her career in 1961 as the assistant warden at the Rotherwood Centre, Rotherham. She then worked as a Area Visiting warden on the first Green Arbour Scheme, visiting thirty elderly people a day on foot. In 1968 she began at Windy Ridge, Aughton where she stayed until she retired in 1993. In 1984 she was awarded the Tunstall Caring Award and in 1990 she was awarded the British Empire Medal.
