Coach and founder of one of the country’s most successful women’s basketball teams. Betty from Sheffield first played basketball with her male colleagues at teacher training college in the 60s. She began a women’s basketball team when she was teaching at a Hatfield secondary school, calling the team the Hatfield Hatters. She had no problem finding girls at the school who wanted to play, only problems finding other teams to play. When the National Women’s League was formed then the Hatters were in the Second division. The team went on to become one of the country’s finest. Now known as the Sheffield Hatters they won 27 out of 32 national competitions open to them between 1989 and 1999||, including nine successive Women’s Basketball League Championships. In 1999 Betty was awarded the OBE for her services to basketball. She is also chair of the (male and female) English Basketball Association.
