Biographical Notes
|
Born 11 June 1886, Bradford. Florence worked at Tankard's mill until she was 18, then as dressmaker and piano teacher, and later ran a bakers and confectioners shop with her sister. In 1935 she organised a meeting in Bradford to publicise the plight of spinsters. This grew into the National Spinsters' Pension Association, a national movement which campaigned for pensions for unmarried women at the age of 55. In 1941 a partial victory was achieved, when pensions were given to all women at 60. The National Spinsters' Pension Association was officially disbanded in 1958.
