Biographical Notes Educated at St. Paul's Girls School and Girton College, Cambridge.

Irene took her PhD in 1930 and then did research in Sweden for two years. She lectured botany at Manchester and became the chair of botany at Leeds in 1946.

She was elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1961 and was president of the Linnean Society 1973-76.
