Judith was born in London in 1951 and adopted as a baby by the family of Bradford bakery firm Asa Nicholson. Married John Donovan. Educated at St. Joseph's Catholic School, Bradford and Woking Girls’ Grammar School, Surrey (aged 14 onwards) and then Hull University. A job as an advertising manager at Grattan brought her back to Bradford. At Grattan she won Female Executive of the Year in 1981. From there she set up her own company, Judith Donovan Associates in 1985. JDA is a top 20 direct marketing agency and it made her a millionaire by her 30s. In 1990 she became chair of the Bradford and District Training and Enterprise Council, a job which she held for eight years, making her the longest serving chair of a TEC. She was Yorkshire Business Woman of Year in 1997 as well as receiving a CBE. In 1999 she became the first woman president of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce.
